Katy ISD officially unveiled the completed $18 million renovation of Legacy Stadium this week, showcasing a facility that rivals many college venues and underscores the outsized role that high school football plays in Texas culture.
The renovation, funded by a 2024 bond approved by district voters, includes a new 12,000-seat grandstand with chair-back seating, a state-of-the-art video scoreboard measuring 40 feet wide, expanded press facilities, and upgraded concession areas. The stadium’s artificial turf field was also replaced with the latest generation of synthetic playing surface.
“Friday nights in Katy are something special, and this stadium reflects the pride our community has in our student-athletes,” said Katy ISD Superintendent Dr. Ken Gregorski at the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Katy ISD’s football program is one of the most storied in Texas, with multiple state championships across its high schools. Legacy Stadium, which also hosts soccer, lacrosse, and track events, serves all eight of the district’s high schools and is regularly filled to capacity during playoff season.
The renovation also includes significant improvements to accessibility, with expanded wheelchair seating sections, new elevators, and sensory-friendly viewing areas designed for fans with autism or sensory processing differences.
“We wanted this to be a place where every member of our community feels welcome,” said athletic director Michael Carter. “The sensory-friendly spaces are something we’re particularly proud of.”
Community reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. Long-time Katy resident and football booster club president Dennis Morgan said the investment was well worth it. “This isn’t just about football — it’s about community identity. People gather here on Friday nights, and having a facility we can all be proud of matters.”
The first event at the renovated stadium will be a spring football showcase in April featuring all eight Katy ISD programs.
