An old advertisement for Republican Texas Sen. John Cornyn has resurfaced, showing him advocating amnesty for illegal aliens residing in the United States.
During the 2020 election cycle, Cornyn released a Spanish-language advertisement stating that he strongly supports legalization for Dreamers — a term used to describe children who were brought to the United States illegally.
The ad was designed to appeal to Hispanic voters in Texas and stated that Cornyn supports efforts to combat sex trafficking, reform policing, and strengthen border security.
After the video went viral, Cornyn’s team reportedly made the video private, preventing public access.
Critics have since pointed to Cornyn’s Senate record on immigration and border policy in response to the resurfaced ad.
While speaking on the Senate floor, Cornyn discussed a proposal that included “border security, interior enforcement, improvements in the E-Verify system, and a path to legal status for DACA recipients.”
In another uncovered video from the Senate floor, Cornyn urged former President Barack Obama to support legislation granting amnesty to millions of illegal aliens in the United States.
“DACA recipients must have a permanent legislative solution. They deserve nothing less,” Cornyn said. “So, the uncertainty about their status, and what will happen to them is no less terrifying for them as it would be for any of us.”
“We need to take action and pass legislation that will unequivocally allow these young men and women to stay in the only home, in the only country they’ve known,” Cornyn added.
Election activist Scott Presler also highlighted another post made by Cornyn’s team, including Matt Mackowiak, Cornyn’s communication director.
The X post read: “No apologies. No compassion. No humanity. No clarity. No path to legal status. A failure by any measure.”
Shortly after Presler posted the statement, Mackowiak appeared to delete the post.
Cornyn is currently in a heated Republican primary runoff against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is attempting to unseat him.
The Republican primary runoff election is scheduled for May 26. The winner will face Democratic candidate James Talarico in the general election.
